Log Replacement Process
Many homeowners question when it is necessary to replace a log or the next steps to repair it. In many cases, we can issue a partial log replacement, specifically when a log is less than 50% rotten or soft. This ensures that the inside of the log wall still matches the other interior logs, so it doesn’t stand out as different. When replacing a half log, new logs are attached to the existing logs with galvanized screws. With River to River, logs are custom-made to a comparable size with our mill, and any spaces between the new and the old logs are filled with backer rods and chinked or caulked. The heads of the screws are countersunk below the log surface, the hole is filled with caulk, and new logs are stained/sealed to match other existing logs.
